Lending a Helping Hand to Michigan Foster Care Closet

Karyna Sitkowski

Foster Care children often arrive at their new foster homes with very little belongings. The Michigan Foster Care Closet (MFCC) opened in 2017 and is fully a volunteer based non-profit organization located in Washtenaw County, but is available to everyone in the state of Michigan. The Foster Closet gives families, foster children, and foster care workers a personalized shopping experience that provides quality items for daily living for all ages. The MFCC hopes that every child feels more confident and achieves better self-esteem when these needs are met. Things such as clothing, shoes, toys, linens, nursery furniture, strollers, car seats, school supplies, hygiene products, safety equipment, and more are provided to families for free. Families are required to make an appointment but, if a family has a placement within the last 30 days, they can reach out for immediate assistance. Children are eligible to shop quarterly or after a major growth spurt.
